Fixed power scopes have one magnification setting, such as 4x or 10x. Because they have fewer moving parts, they are simple, rugged and often lighter than variable scopes. They also hold zero well, so many shooters trust them for hard use.
This range includes the proven Trijicon ACOG, plus models from Athlon, Sig Sauer, Meopta, Leupold and Sightmark.
Why choose fixed power scopes?
First, they are easy to use. There is no zoom ring to set, so you just aim and shoot. Second, the simple design means there is less that can fail. As a result, they are a favorite for duty rifles and hard hunting trips.
They are also often cheaper than a variable scope with the same glass. So you get more optical quality for your money.
Which magnification?
3x to 4x: fast and forgiving, ideal for AR rifles and brush hunting.
6x: a good middle ground for general use.
10x and above: better for varmints and target shooting.
Things to keep in mind
A fixed scope cannot zoom out for close shots. Therefore, pick a power that suits the distance you shoot most. In addition, check the eye relief, because some models need your eye close to the lens.
Also look at the reticle. For example, many ACOG models use a BDC reticle with holdover marks for set distances. That makes quick shots easier at unknown range.
